Finding the right solutions to backing up the data on your devices maybe like finding the matching pieces of a puzzle.  Some are a possible fit, others when you explore all the options, are a perfect fit.

Taking the time to have your data backed up properly on your computer, laptop, tablet, and phone will save you aggravation and countless hours to recreate that data, or the huge expense of data recovery. New obstacles are constantly being added to the equation.  A good example is the new ransom viruses that are raising their ugly heads.   If you now currently only back up to a network or external drive, the ransom viruses not only encrypt your computer or laptop, but also the back-up drive installed.   If you perform a second back-up to a cloud, and the scheduled back-up occurs after the infection, your data will also be encrypted there and also held hostage to their monetary demands.  What I have recommended to my clients is to install a second back-up drive and rotate them every other day or weekly to minimize the data loss if you should have the misfortune to be infected by a ransom virus.

Cloud solutions are a great piece of the puzzle to preserve the data on your devices, but make sure that the data being placed on the cloud is encrypted to keep it safe from prying eyes and hackers.

For home based users, in most cases a simple installation of a flash or thumb drive and automated software to back up your data, contacts, calendars, photos and videos is a cost wise solution.  No device is full proof I recommend replacing them every three years just to be on the safe side.
